5 Books Perfect for Fall
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, job searching, and entering into fall in the Northern Hemisphere, I am finding myself now more than ever needing things to look forward to. Even though I can’t physically go anywhere, I can always go somewhere new with a book. Here are a few of my favorites depending on your mood this season.
If you want something spooky…
Coraline, by Neil Gaiman
In this dark fantasy, young Coraline sets out to explore the new home her family moves into. Behind a locked door and a brick wall, Coraline finds herself in a reality that is a mirror of her own. At first it seems to be better than her true reality in every way, but she soon discovers that not all is so sweet as it seems.
I absolutely adore this book, and reread it every couple years. It’s a perfect read for around Halloween.
If you want something romantic…
Indigo, by Beverly Jenkins
Hester Wyatt is an esteemed conductor on the Underground Railroad. She is no nonsense, smart, and incredibly generous. Her very predictable life is suddenly turned upside down when an injured man, the well-known “Black Daniel,” is brought to her cellar and she is tasked with nursing him back to health.
More than a romance, this book is set in 1860s Michigan and is rich with history about the Underground Railroad and the slave trade in America.
If you need a good cry…
A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness
This book is a darkly funny and heartbreaking exploration of how we handle grief and the stories we tell ourselves to process it. It is also beautifully illustrated.
If you want to be inspired and/or love food…
Stir, by Jessica Fechtor
Fechtor tells the story of how she recovered from suffering a brain aneurysm at the age of 28. As soon as she gets home and is able to stand, she begins her true recovery in her kitchen. She shares some of her favorite recipes alongside the stories of how they came to be.
If you want to listen to an audiobook…
Daisy Jones & The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Travel back in time to the 1970s to follow the rise of Daisy Jones and The Six, the genre-defining rock and roll group. Told as an oral history, this book weaves together the narrative of the band members and those close to them as they were interviewed about the band in present-day. Though this is a work of historical fiction, it all feels so real.
The audiobook features a full cast and some of the best voice acting I’ve heard! It is truly an experience.
